The Devil's Miner by Richard Ladkani and Kief Davidson (Germany and USA)

04_Drilling_Miner
This is the story of Basilio (14) and his brother Bernardino (12), who both work in the dangerous Bolivian silver mines of Cerro Rico.  Through their eyes, we encounter a mysterious world of devout Catholic miners who serve their ties with God upon entering the mountain.  It is an ancient belief that the Devil, represented by hundreds of statues in the tunnels, determines the fate of all miners.  Living in virtual poverty, the boys have to work hard to efford the supplies vital to their education.  But Basilio is certain that only the mountain devil can decide whether they will be able to continue school.  For without an education, the brothers have no chance to escape their destiny in the mines.
