The Third Dirk Vandersypen Award was announced on March 12th, 2004 in Ghent (Belgium) in the presence of winning director Carlos Bosch, friends and relatives of Dirk Vandersypen and an enthusiastic public, After a short but warm ceremony, the winning documentary Balseros was shown on big screen.
The decision of the jury was made public by chairman Leo De Bock.
On March 31, 2004, VRT-Canvas broadcasted Balseros in 'Bewogen Leven'
