2001 - The Jury
 

An international jury selected the winning documentary. Each jury member will either have extensive television experience, a thorough knowledge of Latin America or be familiar with the work of Dirk Vandersypen.


The jury of the 2001 Dirk vandersypen Award consisted of:

Mr. Joel Simon - Chairman of the jury:
Journalist and author of several books and articles on Latin America; Programme Coordinator  at the Committee to Protect Journalists. Mr. Simon shared a house with Dirk for several years in Mexico.

Mr. Leo De Bock - Secretary of the jury:
Former head of the TV news department and Network Manager of the quality Belgian TV channel VRT-Canvas; a friend and former colleague of Dirk's, who has himself made several award-winning documentaries.

Mr. Herman Portocarero - Member of the jury:
Belgian diplomat and author of several books; former Belgian ambassador to Cuba.

Mr. Melchior Casals - Member of the jury:
Cuban film-maker who assisted Dirk in the making of his award-winning documentary "Cuba 111". Melchior Casals now lives in Miami.

Mr. Rigoberto Lopez Pego - Member of the jury:
internationally renowned Cuban film director and maker of several award-winning movies and documentaries.

Mr. David Adams - Member of the jury:
British journalist; the Latin American correspondent of the St. Petersburg Times - a leading Florida newspaper; contributor to The Times of London and The Economist. Mr. Adams worked with Dirk from their office in Miami.

Mrs. Ann De Roo - Member of the jury:
Dirk's life-partner; medical doctor involved in research into HIV and AIDS at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp.
